Marco walked into his first powerlifting meet on June 27th like he'd done it a hundred times before. Marco came to the OPS team seven months ago just lost in his training, he had been training on his own for a long time but just needed some help improving technique and giving him a road map to success. Marco is one of the hardest workers I’ve had the pleasure of coaching. We had a few talks about first meet jitters the weeks leading into the competition but Marco just showed up and lifted like a pro.
Marco competed in the Open division, 100kg class, weighing in at 94.4kg.
Squat was the lift Marco has improved on the most since we started working together. We’ve almost completely reworked his stance and squatting style so this was the lift we were most conservative with. We opened at a smooth 192.5 kg for 3 whites. The second attempt, 202.5 kg, was probably an RPE 7.5. Then another conservative 10 kilo jump for his third attempt at 215 kg. Three for three, and each one looked more comfortable than the last.
Bench went the same way. 112.5, then 122.5, then a small fight at 132.5 kg to close it out to go 6/6 going into deadlifts.
Deadlift went just as smooth, Opened 205 kg. Second attempt 220 kg. Third attempt 227.5 kg, and he pulled it clean for a deadlift PR, and a nine for nine day.
First meet, first place in his division, 9th place overall, 575 kg total, 363.16 DOTS.
Marco didn't have the perfect prep, his outside stress factors were higher than I know he would be comfortable with me sharing. Marco had some small injuries and missed lifts in prep, he didn't let any of that stop him from going out and doing what he set out to do. He trusted the process and really put a show on for us and I couldn't be more proud as a coach.
